We are coming up on the end of 2018 and I know what is on everybody's mind...those New Years resolutions. Lose weight, eat better, stop smoking, ect. There is a fundamental flaw that most people fail to realize, and this is why they don't stick to their resolution. Lack of GOALS! These resolutions are just wishes. If you think back on past New Years and past resolutions you could probably put 'I wish' in front of every failed resolution. Everybody is guilty of it, even myself.
If you were to approach this year a little differently and look at them as New Year goals, it puts a whole new mindset on things. Instead of eating better as a whole, maybe it could be, find a way to track what you're eating so you are more informed. Two years ago I started tracking what I was eating in the MyFitnessPal app. I didn't just do the foods that looked good and made me feel good putting them in there, I put it all. The bowls of sugary cereal in the morning, the late night snacks, the mountains of ice cream. This was my first step to my new goal, eat better. When you hear low carb or keto, or protein, protein, protein it might as well be a foreign language at first. When you visually see that the food you are putting in you is neither low carb or low fat, rather high carb, high fat and low protein you really start paying attention. I was holding myself accountable, because ignorance was no longer an option. It this golden age of knowledge at our finger tips 'I don't know how' is no longer an excuse, because Google knows what you don't.
Another example would be, get more active, not so much a membership to a gym you know you have no motivation to go to. A couple facts:
1. Lifting Weights are good for you. Both heart health wise and strength and physical appearance.
2. Getting in a gym and getting a treadmill or elliptical is good for you.
3. Forcing yourself to do something you have no desire to do is BAD for you, and you will are failing before you even get started.
The fact is, the gym is not for everybody. I could sit here and tell you all sorts of statistics about what 3 days a week of weight lifting could do for your mental state, heart health and physical appearance, but none of that matters if you hate every minute of it, and you quit. This thought process opens up your mind for excuses. What you could do instead is set a goal to get outside more, go for walks or as simple as stretching. @alks would turn into jogs, jogs might turn into mile runs. Stretching might turn into yoga, Go rock climbing, or set a goal to hike more. Get up, move around, and be active. Because if you hate the gym now and you think the change in the calendar year is going to help that, I promise you it won't. You have to want change. You have to want it, because when it gets tough (and it will), you have to have a reason why you're pushing through it.
Here is my New Years resolution for you, 'Find Your Why'. Step one, nothing else matters. What is your 'why'? Once you have your why, really sit down and set goals for yourself. Personal growth goals, goals with meaning behind it and not what the $10 a month gym advertisements we are inundated with. Find yourself like minded people, surround yourself with people that will hold you accountable, and push toward your goal and forget about the resolution. I hope your 2019 is full of checked off goals, lifestyle changes, and and overall better feeling about you. Because that is what matter, quality of life is everything, so go enjoy this one life you have, and do everything you can to help it last as long as you can.
