What is your why? Everyone either has one I need one. It’s what gets us up in the morning, what motivates us, and what keeps us excited when we’re feeling down with where we are. What is your reason for starting or continuing your fitness journey? Take some time and really think about that, why am I exercising, why should I exercise, how should I exercise?
So many times people get burnt out on exercising because they have no clear-cut path to their goals. Setting goals and figuring out how to achieve those goals is the only way you will stay motivated through the hard times of an active lifestyle.
Some common mistakes people make when going into being more active, and trying to achieve a healthier lifestyle:
1. I’m going to walk for 30 minutes on my lunch break, that will make me healthier . If you were to think about all the things you do in a day, moving from the bed to the kitchen for breakfast, walking into work, walking to the break room, all the little things that we don’t think about that we are actually moving, we are walking. True health benefits from exercise only come from increasing your heart rate to a level to force your body to work harder, or you apply an exhaustive enough stimulus to force your muscles to grow. This is why I recommend if you had the choice between cardio and strength training, always choose strength.
2. I work out so I can eat whatever I want. Although the statement can be applicable in someways, in order to live a healthier life you have to eat healthier. The saying, “ you can’t have your cake and eat it too”, can be taken figuratively and literally. If you truly thought about this, you would realize it’s a lie too. Fitness goals will never be reached if a solid nutritional diet is not kept. I truly believe that between nutrition and fitness, nutrition is the most important focus so your body can function optimally day in and day out. This doesn’t mean be strict to an unsustainable diet. It just means be mindful of what you put in your body most of the time.
3. Something is better than nothing. Is it? Doing 50 push-ups as a workout for no other reason just to do it, what are you accomplishing? Walking/running for 30 minutes, but not pushing yourself to your limits, why? Figure out your goals first. Is your goal to get stronger, or to compete competitively in a 5K, would it take some inches off your waist so you can fit in to a goal size pair of jeans. There is a tool specific for every problem, once you figure out the problem we can help you figure out the tool needed.
Once you figure out your why, the sky is the limit of what you can achieve. If you have the wheel to make a change, let us help you with the tools and knowledge to make that change. We can help with nutrition tips, workout plans, and continued guidance on your path of being more healthy. Enjoy the journey, know there are going to be times when it feels easy and times when it’s going to be hard. Stick with it and don’t throw in your towel!
